Crisis Management & Advisory
Some of Toby's most consequential work takes place outside the courtroom. He advises heads of state, governments, public institutions and individuals when legal, political and reputational risk converge, and when the decisions taken in the first days will shape everything that follows.
For states, that has meant institutional and legislative reform, the design of investigative and prosecutorial bodies, the recovery of stolen state assets, and advice on dealings with international courts and accountability mechanisms. He is Special International Legal Adviser to the President of the Republic of Botswana, has served as International Legal Counsel and Special Adviser to the Office of the President of Madagascar, and has advised governments and attorneys general in post-conflict states across the Balkans, the Middle East and South Asia.
For individuals and companies, it means coordinating the response to threats that arrive together: a criminal investigation in one country, an INTERPOL notice in another, sanctions, asset freezes and hostile media coverage. Toby works alongside solicitors, foreign counsel and communications advisers, from Outline Chambers in London and, through The Mentors Group, in Dubai.
